What are your favorite shoes, socks, and nutrition for running?
My favorite shoes are anything by Skechers Performance; in particular GoTrail, GoRun Ultra Road and GoTrail Ultra. For socks, honestly I love Injinji the best, but also really like Swiftwick. Nutrition? Sword. Ginger Sword.
What has been your most interesting race experience (give details)?
Most interesting race experience has got to be the Spartathlon in Greece. This rather small event (only few hundred ultra runners) receives massive support from so many folks in all the little villages we pass through during the 153 mile race from Athens to Sparta. Even rush hour traffic was halted in Athens to allow the runners to follow a rather large thoroughfare out of the city! But most interesting were the many children who'd run up along side you wanting your autograph! Unbelievable! The finish was so amazing as well. Rolling into Sparta, folks are out on their balconies and at outdoor cafes yelling and cheering you on. Then in the last few hundred feet before the finish (touching the foot of the statue of King Leonidis) you practically have to fight your way through the throngs of spectators all cheering and yelling their support! It's an unbelievable experience unlike anything I've ever done; probably as close to a true Olympic finish as I'll ever come!
What is your worst training habit?
I'm terrible at following a fixed schedule or program. I'm very inconsistent. I'm more happy just taking my training almost literally day by day or week by week. It's one reason why I've never run a really strong marathon because success there requires getting on and sticking to a tough training schedule!

Born in Woodland, California and grew up just a bit away in Sacramento. Attended the Virginia Military Institute (1997) where I graduated with a B.S. in Physics (minor in Astronomy). Met my lovely wife Kathy not long later and relocated to Alabama. Earned my M.S. in Computer Science from UAH and am currently pursuing my PhD in Computer Science. I’ve been working as a computer scientist / analyst for over 15 years. In addition to my passion for running, I also enjoy off-road unicycling and fat-biking as a means to cross-train for trail running.
